Computer numerical control (CNC) machining is a manufacturing process in which computer inputs are used to control machining tools, such as drill bits and lathes. It is used by many industries for various prototype and end-use components.

The process begins with a digital 3D design created using CAD software, which the computer can convert into a series of instructions for machine cutting tools. These instructions are called G codes. Once the G code is sent to the machine, very little manual monitoring is required, because the machine knows when and where to cut and performs processing automatically. Compared to traditional machining, this saves a lot of time and cost, where skilled mechanics use manually operated cutting tools to cut the workpiece.

Processing is a subtraction process, which means that the equipment removes existing materials instead of introducing new materials. Unlike additive manufacturing, where 3D printers layer materials to form objects, CNC machining involves cutting parts away from invisible blocks called "workpieces." The excess material is discarded or recycled, eventually leaving the finished part. More complex CNC machine tools, those with more axes, can cut the workpiece in a more complex way and produce parts with more complex geometries.
